Sometimes the things you want in life, that seem as if they should be the easiest to acquire, turn out to be the hardest. If you do get them, they’re often found in a form or place you wouldn’t have envisioned.

What you wanted most in the world on the morning of our last full day of vacation, was some peace and privacy so you could write or, at the very least, think. you had spent nearly the entire vacation with Anna in tow and, while you realize a mother’s primary duty during these years is childcare, you was ready for a break. During the time that Rick was kayaking in Monterey or taking his sailing instructor course -which he passed with flying colors- on the opposite side of San Diego from us, Anna had badgered you about missing school. Each complaint reminded you that if he was in the care of those babysitters -I youan educators- you could be passing the time as you chose, in peace, rather than listen to her youwling hour after hour. you could not be alone even in the bathroom. you had started sneaking out of bed in the middle of the night or in the afternoon while people were watching television and hiding with my notebook and pen. you would have time to jot down only a few lines before being asked to relinquish either my refuge or more of my attention.

More even than the aloneness, you craved quiet. you have always been a person for whom aural stimulation is all. Pauses in conversation must be filled with words and phrases and anecdotes no matter how irrelevant. Housework is backed by reggae or work songs, sometimes of my own creating. There is talk radio for driving, the Beastie Boys for web design, and Barry White or Percy Sledge for lovemaking. But this vacation with its constant cacophony of trains, race cars, airplanes, shouting, Mariachis, and television had rendered you starving for silence.

When Rick and Anna proposed spending the day at Sea World and asked you if you wanted to tag along, you declined immediately.

“It looks like there are a lot of rides,” you explained, “I don’t do rides so it would be a waste of money.” A series of hormone induced anxiety attacks at Disneyland and a long past, but not forgotten, go round on the Zipper were sufficiently youmorable that Rick didn’t argue.

Opel Peugeot Seat

In Lothar Böttcher’s sculptures glass becomes the focal point. Through glass the artist aims to manipulate and in a sense capture light. He attempts to make the viewer aware of the surroundings within the glass. Creating lenses, he offers a point of view (abstractly), changing perspective and observation of the contiguous space. Böttcher asks whether we really observe or understand our role in the world around us due to filters like beliefs and personal experiences. Everybody has a unique point of view. The variables are infinite. Opel Peugeot Seat “Without light there is no subject. Without subject (particles and waves) there will be no light. Call it the “Ubuntu” of the Universe. There’s a funny side to existence if one thinks of everything as black and therefore invisible, until there’s light! Until it happens…” – Ignus Gerber “Sound is capable to create various environments transporting the listener into a virtual world. Sound cannot only be heard, but can be felt and even seen, creating all kinds of possibilities. Just close your eyes and see the light within”- Justice Mokoena

the Second World War

I thought the whole point of guerilla marketing is that it’s a superior, low-cost alternative to paid media?

New Tagline = New Brand? Not So Fast, JC Penney.
February 15th, 2007

The Brains on Fire Blog relays news of JC Penney’s new tagline, “Every Day Matters.”

Apparently, this is another example of how bringing on a new agency often yields a new tagline. Oh, yes, there’s the quote from agency representative about “resonating with consumers.”
A final word on last.fm. From my brief exploration it seems that the site has quite a variety of “expertise” in different styles and genres of music. Typically you find music sites are very top heavy in certain areas and very sparse in others. I was happy to find many users who had similar interests in all of my favorite musical areas. I’m curious to see if you guys find that to be the case as well. Anyway, you can view my music profile at

I remember, today, my uncle who died in his ancestral homeland of Belgium, during the Second World War, fighting to free them from the grip of Hitler’s troops. He is buried in Europe… somewhere. I think of all the cousins who fought in all the wars since the War Between the States forward. And, I think of my Great Grandfather, who fought in the 17th Regiment of South Carolina Infantry, Company “I”, along with a slew of great uncles, cousins and such. Some of them never made it back home to their loved ones.

That’s what this day is about. Remembering them, and remembering that freedom is not free. We pay for it. We pay for it in blood. But, it is so precious… millions of Americans have willingly lain down their lives to secure it for the generations yet unborn.

Admittedly I’ve been slack on the Friday game thing but have no fear I’m back once again with a killer flash game. If your a fan of the Discovery Channel show Deadliest Catch then you’ll immediately recognize the premise of this one. The objective is to catch as many crab as possible in a limited amount of time. To do this you’ll need to buy a boat, outfit it and hire a crew. Sounds simple but you’ll need just the right mix of equipment, men and knowhow if you want to be successful.
Deadliest Catch
Is it a new day at JC Penney? I don’t think so. Spike Jones at Brains on Fire testifies:

“A rallying cry is great. But a remarkable experience is even better. It transcends tag lines and advertising. (And when you have a great name, you might not even need a tagline because your name says it all.)

“Creating a new tagline won’t change anything. Try starting with the culture. The experience. The people inside your company.”
